Environment and territory
(the town of Montepulciano)
The name of Montepulciano derives from Latin Mons and Publicianus ("Mount of Publicianus"). According to legend, it was founded by the Etruscan King Porsenna of Chiusi; recent findings prove that a settlement was already in existence in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. After the unification of Italy and the drying of the Val di Chiana, the town remained the most important agricultural centre in the area. Montepulciano stands on a height at the southern extremity of the Chiana Valley in the province of Siena in the heart of Tuscany. From its earliest origins, Montepulciano was linked with wine. Wine connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile among Italy's best. However, it is often underestimated in terms of the interest of its art and architecture. In fact, in former times its citizens held their city to be on a par with Siena, and indeed Montepulciano is packed with interest and charm and a must see for visitors to Tuscany.
